Tuff is an extraordinary rock. Thanks to its consistency, in ancient times it had many uses: for the creation of canals and water cisterns, digging roads, the opening of warehouses and cantinas, and as a building material for homes, public buildings, tombs, etc. The first to use tuff were the Etruscans, then the Romans and then people during the Middle Ages. The result of all this are the so-called “Tuff Cities”, Pitigliano, Sovana and Sorano, astounding monuments to the qualities of this stone.
Walking along the streets of this tuff rich area is an extremely evocative and interesting experience in terms of history, art and culture. It allows you to discover villages clinging to the hills where the remains of the Etruscans, Romans and spectacular Medieval villages are overlapped and combined. All marked by tuff’s typical reddish colour. Rocky villages, Etruscan necropolises, the striking “via cave” with their high walls carved in the rock, caves, medieval alleyways, sixteenth-century fortresses and caves, medieval and Baroque churches.
Pitigliano rises up on a hill of tuff, surrounded by deep gorges. A place where the medieval Orsinis are entwined with the sixteenth-century and Baroque. It is also famous for its important Jewish community.
On another hilltop is Sorano, a characteristic village made up of a combination of medieval houses, sixteenth-century buildings, and walls surrounding the city, among which is a maze of narrow and enchanting alleyways.
Sovana is the smallest of the three towns, but also that which shows the most mix of history, coming together in a single village. The large Etruscan ruins, in part represented by necropolises and in part absorbed into the village fabric itself, juxtaposes the Roman presence, medieval prosperity, which today is still demonstrated through the remains of the Rocca Aldobrandesca Fortress and numerous buildings, and the enchantment of the mysterious “vie cave”…
From Agriturismo Poggio Mirabile, you can reach the Tuff Cities via two different routes, each 20 km. By taking the first route, you first reach Pitigliano and then the others about 5 km away. By taking the second, you reach Sovana first.
